GRE Scoring

Understanding the GRE scoring system is crucial for setting realistic goals and interpreting your results.

Here’s a breakdown of how the GRE is graded:

  Verbal Reasoning

Score Range:      130-170

Increments:          1-point

  Quantitative Reasoning

Score Range:      130-170

Adaptive Testing:

The GRE is section-level adaptive, meaning the difficulty of the second section of Verbal and Quantitative Reasoning is based on your performance in the first section.

Scaled Scores:

Your raw score (number of correct answers) is converted to a scaled score through a process that accounts for the difficulty of the questions.

  Analytical Writing

Two Tasks:

You are required to write two essays – an "Issue" task and an "Argument" task.

Scoring:

Each essay is scored by at least one human rater and a computer program. The scores are averaged to give a final score for each task.

Score Range:

The final score is the average of the two tasks, rounded to the nearest half-point.

  Score Reporting

Score Validity:

GRE scores are valid for five years from the test date.

Score Select:

You can choose which scores to send to schools with the ScoreSelect option, giving you control over which test results are seen by institutions.
